Hilo is moving to Honolulu!
Okay, not totally – but for ten days Sig Zane will put up shop in Waikiki. Including wife Nalani Kanaka`ole and son Kuha`o, the `ohana will bring their latest collaboration in design, sculpture, and lecture.
Presented by Interisland Terminal, this innovative retail/exhibit pop-up encourages a “free zone” to bring forth the latest ideas. A non-profit group, Interisland Terminal, supports emerging and established local creative producers and provides unique social and intellectual opportunities for a broader creative community. Further, they believe that engaging dialogue about innovation and creativity is critical to the development of our community.
Zanes + Kanakaole have selected the theme of inter-island travel, taking the lead from the name of the non-profit group. Together, they have created a new fabric featuring hand-cut bamboo stamp designs. `Ohe kapala is one of the tools that is used to decorate kapa, allowing the artist flexibility and license. This design features elements that describe migration, universe, and cohesiveness. The fabric will be offered in limited editions of accessories used in travel: computer cases, pouches for toiletries or wires, in addition to their line of distinct cotton clothing.
There will be several talk story offerings too. Sharing their method of idea-to-real-products, the family will walk through the process of how they manifest their creativity. There will be Q & A at different times to open dialogue about the current stand of kapa, hula, travel…
What’s a pop-up without the goodies? Sig promises to have a selection of products from their Hilo store too. He said to look for their event tees because that will definitely be in limited numbers. The popular Hilo Map design will be a feature too, since they did choose to call the event ITO, the three-letter airport designation for their hometown.
